AI job search vs job boards
The biggest difference is who decides the order of your results. Indeed and LinkedIn rank by relevance and also sell placement: Indeed prioritizes sponsored jobs in relevant results, and LinkedIn lets promoted jobs reach the top of search. AI job search engines that sell no placement, such as Dreamwork (our publisher) and HiringCafe, rank by fit alone. Job boards still win on breadth.
The short answer
- Indeed says sponsored jobs are prioritized in relevant search results, and employers pay per click or per started application.
- LinkedIn says promoted jobs can reach the top of search with a Promoted tag, and free posts lose visibility over time.
- Wellfound sells Promoted Jobs that rank higher. Glassdoor ads are bought through Indeed.
- Dreamwork and HiringCafe say they sell no placement, so their order reflects fit.
How do sponsored jobs work on Indeed?
Indeed sponsored jobs are jobs an employer pays to promote, and Indeed explains them on the pages it writes for employers. While a job is sponsored, it is "prioritized in relevant search results", and free posts fall back as newer jobs arrive.5 Employers pay per click or per started application, depending on the account and market, with no flat fee.5
Sponsored jobs also show up more often and for longer in search results and job alerts. In the US, Indeed says its Premium sponsored jobs reach the top three results up to 2.0 times as often as Standard ones. Employers get three free posts a month, and Indeed may require some jobs to be sponsored, such as commission-only roles and staffing agency posts.6
What does Promoted mean on LinkedIn jobs?
A Promoted tag means the employer is paying LinkedIn to promote the job. LinkedIn's help center says promoted jobs are eligible for the top of search results, carry a Promoted tag, and send mobile alerts to candidates. Free job posts lose visibility over time.14 Promotion is pay per click: the employer pays for clicks from the job's country, within a daily or total budget, and a job that spends its total budget is hidden from job seekers.15
Do Wellfound and Glassdoor sell placement?
Yes, both do. Wellfound sells Promoted Jobs that rank higher in qualified searches, and posting is free when the job lists a salary.32 Glassdoor's paid placement runs through Indeed: eligible Indeed job ads appear on both sites, and employers pay for the campaign through Indeed.11
Are AI job recommendations affected by sponsored jobs?
On Indeed, AI recommendations and paid placement overlap. Indeed's own description of its matching says 70% of applications to sponsored jobs come from its AI recommendations.4 So a job that reaches you as a recommendation may also be one an employer paid to promote. That does not make it a bad job. It means the ranking answers two questions at once: how well it fits you, and what the employer spent.
Which AI job search tools sell placement?
Indeed, LinkedIn and Wellfound sell placement. Dreamwork and HiringCafe say they do not. The table answers two questions for each tool we cover: can employers pay to rank higher, and where do the listings come from.

Dreamwork says employers cannot pay for placement and it runs no ads.1 HiringCafe says the same about ads and pay-to-win placement.29 Both statements are the companies' own.
How can you spot a sponsored job?
- On LinkedIn, look for the Promoted tag on a job card.14
- On Indeed, the Urgently Hiring label appears only on sponsored jobs.6
- On any board, open the job on the employer's career page before you apply. If it is not there, the listing may be stale.
- Sort by date when you want the newest jobs rather than the most promoted ones.
When is a job board the better choice?
Choose a big board when breadth matters more than ranking. Indeed operates in over 60 countries and covers every kind of work, including local and hourly jobs that resume-matched tech tools do not try to cover.10 LinkedIn is the better place when you expect a referral or want recruiters to find you. Use an engine that sells no placement when you want the order of your results to mean fit and nothing else.
